Since 1884, the first Monday in September has been a holiday in the
US, as a tribute to workers. Canada has the same, though it's spelled
Labour Day. Many other countries have International Workers Day
May Day instead, commemorating past struggles for workers rights.  

Typically Labor Day is a big travel weekend. It’s the unofficial end of
summer, the last long weekend. With soaring gas prices, many people
are spending considerably more money just to go to and from work,
and are curtailing travel plans because their disposable income has gone
straight into the gas tank.  

The Labor Day holiday offers the last chance for a summer fling, and
there is every sign that millions of travelers will take to the highways and
the skies this weekend.  

Late-summer air fares, for instance, are more expensive than last year.
For the first week in September, fares to Florida, Hawaii, Las Vegas
and Europe were up between 9 and 17 percent through the end of June,
compared with a year ago, according to Sabre Airline Solutions.  

The early arrival of Labor Day will cut summer short for many families,
placing a bit more emphasis on this last shot at summer vacation, said
AAA Travel Vice President Sandra Hughes. The potentially record high
holiday travel reflects continued strong vacation travel among Americans
as the summer has progressed.
